One More Time -- Less Choices, Please
I'm going to buy me a new computer this year -- and I've been trying to figure out whether I'm going to stay with Windows or switch to Mac.
Simple, right? 2 choices.
Well, those 2 choices have consumed me for the last few weeks. There's hardly a day goes by when I don't think about the issue. I won't go into pros and cons of the switch and the two OS. I'm obsessed with making the right choice and find an I-Can't-Believe-You-Found-It bargain solution that'll give me a rocket ship.
One thing I have to say, though, is that while it's easy to get obsessed about things like speed and power, I believe one of the most important, if not the most important, factor in choosing a tool is ease of use. This is a tool for creative endeavors. It really needs to be intuitive and easy to use -- and you'll forget about whether the thing is as fast as the next machine.
I also believe that's one of the reasons why Google took off despite having a later start than other online giants. For example, go to Google, Yahoo and MSN. Which one will give you a sigh of relief? Which one makes it most obvious what it is?
I am aware of this, yet there are many different variables in choosing a computer that it just keeps overwhelming me. It's not like I don't have gazillion other things that I need to think about.
So I'm going to wait. I don't need a new computer right at this moment. The longer I wait, the more my future needs for computing will become clearer, and the cheaper computers will become. I'm going to gather my will and say no to the instant gratification. Yes, I have the money now, yes, I can choose now.
And I'm choosing to wait. That is my decision. You can stop thinking about it NOW.
