About the album title

My debut album is called "Darkness Reveals the Beauty of Truth."

I'm sure you knew that by now. ;)

One of my favorite lines in the whole album are from the opening track, "Shark." It says:

"Hey, join me in the dark
We'll look for the truth, the shark."

It really summed up what this album is about. However, I didn't want to name the album "shark." I considered "join me in the dark" -- but it felt too generic. The whole concept of darkness has been quite well-used, it's even taken as a band name. Other candidates came and went, until one day I stumbled on it.

Darkness Reveals the Beauty of Truth.

Wow. At first I was taken aback by the boldness of this line. It's way pretentious and it takes itself quite seriously. More so than I felt comfortable. "Beauty of Truth." Those are big, heavy words. I still feel a tinge of discomfort when I sit and think about what it means, or when I have to tell someone what the title is.

But at the same time, I was quite drawn to it. If I encountered an album, with primarily black cover, saying "Darkness Reveals the Beauty of Truth," I would at least pick it up. It's my kind of title. It's big and bold, pretentious as all hell -- but you know, if it has such a big title, then the chances of the music standing up to such a heavy headline must be pretty good. No sane person will name an album as such if it was a teeny-bopper party album or juvenile punk rock album.

Besides, it leads me to ponder a number of questions. What the heck is "beauty of truth?" And is it in this album? And how can darkness reveal something -- as opposed to concealing? I have my own answers to such questions, though the answer really lies with each listener.

The sentence had such a power, I just couldn't imagine any 1, 2 or 3-word phrase would compete with it. The more I thought about it, the more I became drawn to the force of such a statement. It's so bold, it makes me squirm inside -- but yet once named, I couldn't dare naming this collection of songs with subtler, smaller references.

So there it is. Darkness Reveals the Beauty of Truth. Come and take a listen -- see what you find in the darkness.
