The real poser lies in...
People underestimate the power of liking. Or loving.
I think we spend way too much time worrying about the technicality of things. Yes, how to do things when and with whom makes a difference. But none of those things, when done wrong, will prevent you from succeeding in what you truly love. The thing you love so passionately that you don't care what the rest of the world says. Look at me, I can probably count on a single hand, the number of people who told me that they like my singing -- opposed to many who kindly advised me not to. And that includes my very own family members, thank you for your support. ;)
Liking to do something is the start and very foundation of success. If you like it enough, you'll get good at doing it. If you like it enough, you'll attract others who like what you're doing. If you like it enough, you can persevere in the face of rejections and humiliations. Though I must say that what you're in love must be the very act of doing what you're doing, not the result of such -- for example, if you love acting, act. If you love guitar, play. But don't do it b/c you want to be a movie star or a rock star. Find the thing that you love to do, and do it. And do it again. Keep doing it.
The tough part for many people, young and old, is to figure out what it is that we're so passionate about. I feel for those who don't have a purpose in their life -- what can one do to fill that void? Nothing. But once you find it, let the love take you and lead you and don't worry about whether you should go to this school or befriend that person or write that article. Strategy and choices are important but no failure will keep you from your success. Just do what's in front of you each step of the way. Do make choices and love executing it.
If you like it enough, then failure is not an option.
